A Historic Mountain Getaway
Gourri Village: A Historical Mountain Retreat in the Heart of Pitsilia
Located in the Lefkosia (Nicosia) district, just 36 km from the capital, the small mountainous village of Gourri sits at the foothills of the Machairas mountain forest in the Pitsilia area. Visitors can reach it by following the E903 and then the E904.
Archaeological findings discovered over time reveal that people have inhabited the area of Gourri since the 5th century AD, living in factions.
Today, Gourri has a population of about 250 inhabitants. There are various versions regarding the village’s founding and naming. One version suggests it was established around 800 AD, deriving its name from the Kourries clan, who controlled the eastern side of the mountain. Conversely, another version claims it comes from the Frankish feudal lord, Jacob de Gourr.
Agios Georgios Church
The village church, dating back to the early 16th century with later modifications, also carries a popular tradition about its dedication. Originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary, it was later rededicated to Agios Georgios after he performed a miracle by protecting the inhabitants from the plague. As a result, the church’s name was changed in his honor.
This tradition continues to be represented in an icon where the Virgin Mary is shown offering the church to Agios Georgios. Inside the church, an inscription reveals that its inauguration occurred on May 24, 1898, while parts of its iconostasis were crafted in 1906. The church boasts a three-aisled design and features a double wooden roof with hooked tiles, architectural elements commonly seen in the mountainous regions of Troodos.

Folk Art Museum & Old Primary School - Weaving workshop in Gourri
The Museum of Folk Art in Gourri, which opened in 2015, is housed in an old stone-built village house that exemplifies traditional folk architecture. Stepping inside, visitors are transported back in time to experience the life of the island’s mountain inhabitants.
The museum showcases various objects that the villagers once used in their daily lives, as well as tools from their work in the countryside. Through these exhibits, visitors can explore the way of life, habits, and traditions of rural society in Cyprus, gaining a deeper understanding of the island’s cultural heritage.
